Your bathroom is a place that is used daily and must withstand the abuse of household cleaners, shower steam, and moisture. Therefore it is critical to choose durable materials for your next bathroom remodeling project.
It will keep your bathroom looking great for years to come. At Patete Kitchen & Bath Design, we’ve put together our best tips for building a durable bathroom.
Quartz Countertops for Moisture and Heat Resistance
When remodeling your bathroom, choosing the right countertop material is critical to your investment. Your countertops will need to withstand excessive moisture, spills, and frequent cleaning. Therefore we recommend that you stay away from countertops made from laminate over particleboard. While these are less expensive, when they become exposed to moisture, they can swell and become damaged. They can also be easily burnt by hair styling tools like a curling iron.
Quartz countertops are a great option for a bathroom because they are durable and do not require sealing. They are also resistant to heat and are available in a variety of colors to match your style. Quartz is also low maintenance and can withstand frequent cleanings.
High-Quality Cabinets for Functionality and Style
Much like with countertops, you want to avoid cabinets or vanities made from particle boards since it tends to swell when exposed to moisture. Typically the particle board cabinets are coved in a thin laminate which can easily peel off. In some cases, the swelling and weakening of the cabinets can lead to the hinges coming out of the wood.
Although these particleboard vanities are cheaper, they won’t last as long as custom cabinets will. You will want to consider MDF cabinets or furniture-grade plywood that are more resistant to warping.
Porcelain Tile for Superior Moisture Resistance
Glazed porcelain tile remains a popular material for bathrooms due to its perfect suitability for wet environments. This type of tile has a .5% porosity, meaning it does not absorb water. Another great benefit is that it is essentially stain-proof. While it is slightly more expensive than mass-produced ceramic tile, it is an extremely versatile material. You can use porcelain tile for your sink, backsplashes, flooring, shower surround, accent walls, and more!
We recommend if you choose to use tile flooring, you will want to make sure to choose a slip-resistant tile. You can also opt for stain-proof urethane grout or epoxy that won’t require resealing.
